ProfileWater is a big part of my life. I lived for 20 years on an arm of the ocean, and I have sailed the Atlantic coast for over 30 years, often acting as navigator. Sailors see large skies, narrow bands of land, and colours affected by the watery atmosphere. When navigating, I hold an image of the chart in mind while sailing the coast. Sailing and navigating have given me a unique view of landscape which creates a new way of looking at Nova Scotia.Since 1990, as part of this vision, I have often used nautical charts in my compositions. More recently, I have employed painted interpretations of charts. This allows me to vary the size and orientation of the chart for better composition. I sometimes inscribe quotations from nautical guides around the edge of paintings. Some of my work is influenced by the look of eighteenth century nautical prints, especially my most recent series about historic lighthouses. In some paintings I place the viewer at sea on a passage along the coast, in others I show activities of sailors. I often use a low horizon line; the viewpoint of a sailor. I also paint waves and weather in an intuitive manner. In these paintings I am thinking of shapes, movement and atmosphere at sea. In all my watercolours I am trying to show more than just what meets the eye as we gaze at the ocean, the boats upon it, and the land beside it.
