Extended Profile
I have been involved in photography for 18 years, teaching myself largely through trial and error. My primary education is in zoology so much of my inspiration for photography comes from the natural world. My zoological training led to many hours studying the intricate behaviours of animals and the environments within which they exist. This experience has taught me to quietly observe and photograph nature, capturing rare moments when an animal reveals a part of its character or when a landscape reveals its true self.
To further develop my skills in observation, I recently studied Miksang contemplative photography. This meditative art form has transformed my view of the natural world and enabled me to see it in its simplicity; at the same time it has encouraged me to take a more confident, gentle and meditative approach.
With such influences, my approach to photography has becomes one of simplicity. I wait for perceptions to arrive rather than attempt to create them. I photograph with minimal equipment: a single camera and lens. I follow no rules. I free my mind of distracting thoughts such as ‘what I should shoot, when should I shoot’ and judgements such as ‘I like that’, or ‘I don’t like that’. With everything simple and free, I can keep my mind empty and my eye open so that I see perceptions as they arise.
My photographs are created through inspiration from the elements of colour and light, texture and form, space and time.
